First off, I highly recommend that you should avoid the inexpensive detectors advertised as kids metal detectors. You get what you pay for. Expect to pay $150 for an entry level metal detector or you will most likely get discouraged by the poor performance of a cheap metal detector. Most major metal detector brands can [...]
Metal Detectors
Metal detectors come in many different configurations in order to excel at finding specific types of buried objects under various environmental conditions (gold nuggets, coins, jewelry, relics, meteorites, at a park, at a beach, underwater). Some detectors are touted as “all-in-one”, “all-purpose”, or “all-terrain” metal detectors. Generally, this type of detector offers average performance but is not exceptional at any one type of metal detecting due to circuitry limitations and user experience. Typically, it is better to use a metal detector that is suited for a specific task.
It would not, for example, make much sense to use an extremely deep metal detector such as a Minelab GPX 5000 gold detector in a manicured park as it detects beyond a reasonable digging depth in a park or public locations. The lack of discrimination would mean that it would not be suitable to trash filled parks. For this reason, serious metal detectorists tend to have more than one metal detector depending on their location and preferences.
