The YF1 Sun Ray Invader is an inline metal detector probe for the Garrett Ace 250 series of metal detectors and is designed to speed up the recovery process by providing a more precise pinpointing process. It is especially helpful for locating finds that are still in the hole after a plug has been cut as the probe helps determine whether the item is located in the bottom of the hole or in the side of the hole.
The YF-1 differs from other pinpointers on the market in that it is an inline probe. This has its advantages and disadvantages. As an inline pinpointer, the probe utilizes the metal detectors circuitry to provide a signal response. As a result, the probe is essentially a mini search coil that will provide the same responses and signal identification as a regular search coil. Other advantages of the Sunray probe are that it does not require additional batteries to operate and it is virtually impossible to lose the probe.
The weaknesses of going the Sun Ray probe route are the high price as they cost almost twice that of the Garrett Propointer and other similar probes. Other negative factors include additional weight added to the metal detector because the probe mounts on the metal detector shaft, the probe’s cable can snag on branches, it is only compatible with the Garrett Ace 150, 250, 350, GTP 1350 and some GTAx metal detectors. If you own or intend to purchase a second metal detector not on that list, then you will need to buy another probe whereas stand-alone pinpointers can be used with any metal detector.
If possible, try one out before buying it. I have found that the Sun Ray line of probes tend to be better suited to some particular metal detector models over others. A quality metal detector probe is worth the higher price, but the decision to go with an inline probe versus a hand-held pinpointer will depend on each individual’s preferences and goals.
